A classic cartoon-style action game!

Cuphead is a popular indie game, which allows you to play the main character to fight cartoon-style bosses. As the name suggests, your character comes with a coffee cup for a face. In this action game, you have to go through numerous levels to indulge in various boss battles. As per the storyline, you need to repay a debt to the devil, and he’s after your life to get returns. Set in the style of 1930s’ Max Fleischer cartoons, the action-packed adventure keeps you engaged for a long time. If you’re looking for a visually innovative Xbox or Nintendo game, this one will be a great choice.

A challenging retro-style adventure!

Cuphead is an action game designed and developed by Studio MDHR. While you can play the game in single-player mode, you have the option to invite a friend to take up the role of Mugman, your sidekick. The game is available for download on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows PCs.

Based on the engaging cartoons of the 1930s, Cuphead revolves around the story of two young kids, who need to collect souls for the bosses after losing their own to the devil. In an animated world, the prime focus of the game is violence. Interestingly, the game doesn’t show much blood and rather focuses on blending action gaming with stunning visuals, fun audio tracks, jazz recordings, and more.

Compared to Sonic Mania, Bendy and the Ink Machine, and other similar games, Cuphead is more difficult. It comes with various levels, some of which can be quite frustrating for beginners. While the higher levels are obviously more challenging, even the first few can take a toll on players.

What’s Cuphead’s storyline?

Cuphead’s storyline revolves around a cute cup, which makes a tough deal with the devil. As such, he needs to repay the debt. Cuphead, while exploring dark worlds, should collect money from the devil’s debtors. This leads to some hard-hitting secrets and boss battles involving guns and other weapons.

As you travel from one bad boss to the next, you keep unleashing ammunition into their tummies, eyeballs, and other vulnerable spots. During every run, you need to dodge complicated patterns of attacks to keep yourself safe.

Does Cuphead have good boss battles?

From beginning to end, the average battle in Cuphead is about two minutes long. Each battle tests your skills and feels more challenging than the previous one. All the fights have been divided into phases, with each phase introducing a new set of challenges. For instance, you may have to jump over bullets or dodge spiraling tiles.

Cuphead tries to string together multiple battles to build a stage. With self-taught lessons, you get a sense of accomplishment at the end of each level. While playing the game, you can rapidly unlock new abilities and weapons. Like Undertale and Unitale, Cuphead lets you experiment with multiple weapons in your arsenal to beat bosses.

In each fight, you can carry two weapons, a special attack, and a bonus power. This helps you defeat the enemies in challenging battles. Considering the difficulty of the stage, you need to come up with a thoughtful loadout plan. For instance, you may have to work with swarms of enemies trying to execute short-range attacks or screen-clearing super moves that can kill all enemies at once.

At the same time, you need to fight off a humongous boss, who constantly fires large projectiles and bullets. In Cuphead, you can purchase buffs, abilities, and loadout weapons with coins hidden across levels. As mentioned earlier, the game comes with a multiplayer mode, wherein you can seek help from Mugman, your sidekick. With retro-style aesthetics and hand-drawn characters, Cuphead is a unique action game full of fun and creativity.

Is Cuphead beginner-friendly?

While there’s a steep learning curve, Cuphead engages players to learn and evolve. With self-taught lessons, you can teach yourself to overcome various obstacles. Each boss battle focuses on a strategy, which needs to be discovered through a trial and error method. In order to avoid stress, you should consider each failure to be a lesson.

For instance, the Medusa-like boss will freeze you in midair, but you’ll eventually find the right spot to hide from her stare. Similarly, when a scary horseman cuts you into oblivion, on the next attempt, you’ll try to spot him preparing a strike. Whether you’re an experienced gamer or someone just trying to have fun, you’ll keep getting better with each attempt.

One of the most interesting aspects of the game is the ability to taunt you into playing more. With amazing background music and appealing visuals, the game encourages you to improve your skills. Since there are plenty of bosses to defeat, you can play the game for a good amount of time. While playing Cuphead, you gradually get oblivious to the idea of monotony and boredom.

With excellent graphics and 1930s animation-style backgrounds, Cuphead is a visual masterpiece. Compared to games like GTA: Vice City, it’s a unique offering in the action gaming genre. Without a doubt, Cuphead keeps you engaged in numerous battles, helping you improve with each level. Once you start playing the game, it’s highly likely that you’d be hooked on for multiple hours in one go.

An excellent choice to go down memory lane!

With watercolor backgrounds, cartoon-style bosses, multiple moves, and fighting techniques, Cuphead provides you with an amazing adventure. While the single-player mode is fun, you can invite friends from Facebook to be a part of your journey. Overall, Cuphead leads to an exciting run through the dark worlds to please the devil. With visually stunning graphics and a fun setting, the game doesn’t disappoint. If you’ve been looking for a unique action game with innovative storytelling, this one will be a good choice.
